Ever heard of Blockbuster?
Video rental stores were once ubiquitous, and Blockbuster was the undisputed king of that realm.
At its peak, Blockbuster had over 9,000 stores worldwide, and the brand was synonymous with Friday night movie rentals.
Think of it this way: McDonald's - a significant player in the fast-food industry - still has less than 40,000 restaurants globally. Blockbuster was everywhere.
The second-largest video rental company at the time was so inconspicuous that you probably can't recall its name without a Google search.
Then came the digital age and streaming services. Netflix emerged, offering DVD rentals by mail. An interesting bit: Netflix's co-founder, Reed Hastings, initially approached Blockbuster with a partnership proposal. Blockbuster declined.
Fast forward, and you probably don't even remember the last Blockbuster store. In 2010, Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy, and its decline mirrored the rise of streaming platforms.
However, Blockbuster's tale has an intriguing twist. The first-ever streaming service was actually launched by Blockbuster in 2004.
Yes, Blockbuster Online was ahead of its time. But, you guessed it, they failed to seize the moment. Netflix pivoted successfully, while Blockbuster clung to its brick-and-mortar model.
In 2013, the last Blockbuster store closed its doors in the U.S., leaving behind a nostalgic relic of an era dominated by late fees and VHS tapes.
Blockbuster's missed opportunities echo a common theme in the business world. Kodak missed the digital camera revolution, and Blockbuster missed the streaming wave.
As investors, we can draw parallels with these stories. The path to success is littered with failures and missed chances. It's like a graveyard of once-promising ideas.
Consider Google Glass. Remember the buzz? It was hailed as the future of augmented reality. Yet, it failed to gain traction and quietly faded away.
Or Microsoft's Windows Phone. It had potential, but it couldn't compete with the duopoly of iOS and Android.
Investments, like business ventures, can go south. Not every stock will be a winner, and not every startup will become the next big thing.
The key is survivability.
Think of your investment portfolio as a diversified arsenal. Apple might dominate the smartphone market, but that doesn't mean you should put all your money into Apple stock.
Remember, diversification is not just a risk management strategy; it's a survival tactic. If one investment fails, others might thrive and keep you afloat.
In the volatile seas of the market, mistakes are inevitable. The crucial question is whether those mistakes are lethal or merely waves in the journey toward success.

The Great Road Strike: Clash Between Truckers and New Hit-and-Run Laws
In a dramatic turn of events, truck drivers across several states have initiated a month-long strike protesting against the stringent hit-and-run penalties imposed by the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) law of 2023. The strike has not only led to road blockades and demonstrations but also sparked concerns about a potential fuel shortage.
Government's Response:
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) engaged with the All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) to address the situation. Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla assured drivers that the new law had not been implemented yet. The decision to invoke Section 106 (2) of the BNS would be made after consulting the AIMTC. Despite this, truck drivers, feeling unrepresented, continue their protests.
Truckers' Concerns and Demands:
Lack of Consultation: Drivers express dissatisfaction over changes in the law without prior consultation.
Steep Penalties: Drivers argue that the jail term and fines are excessive, considering their monthly income of ₹10,000 to ₹15,000.
Detailed Accident Investigation Protocol: Demand for a comprehensive accident investigation protocol in the absence of which drivers may be unfairly deemed guilty.
Traffic Violations: Call for better enforcement of traffic rules, monitoring overloading, and restricting movement of tractor-trolleys.
Working Hours: Emphasis on implementing permissible working hours under the Motor Transport Workers’ Act, 1961 (capped at eight hours).
Training and Insurance: Advocacy for driver training, provision of insurance, and ergonomic truck cabins to address driver fatigue.
Rohit Baluja, Chairman of the Institute of Road Traffic Education, emphasizes the need for police training in implementing the BNS. He calls for a holistic approach, including better use of forensic evidence, regulation of working hours, and ergonomic truck cabins to address driver fatigue.
Aditya L1 reaches its destination successfully!
“The orbit of Aditya-L1 spacecraft is a periodic halo orbit which is located roughly 1.5 million km from Earth on the continuously moving sun-Earth line with an orbital period of about 177.86 earth days. This halo orbit is a periodic, three-dimensional orbit at L1 involving sun, earth and a spacecraft. This specific halo orbit is selected to ensure a mission lifetime of 5 years, minimizing station-keeping manoeuvres and thus fuel consumption and ensuring a continuous, unobstructed view of the sun,” the ISRO said after the orbit insertion was accomplished.
It further said that the insertion of Aditya-L1 into this halo orbit presents a critical mission phase, which demands precise navigation and control.
“A successful insertion further involved constant monitoring along with the adjustment of the spacecraft’s speed and position by using onboard thrusters. The success of this insertion not only signifies ISRO’s capabilities in such complex orbital manoeuvres, but it gives confidence to handle future interplanetary missions,” the ISRO added.
Subsequently, ISTRAC carried out four earth-bound manoeuvres between September 3 and 15. Aditya-L1 on September 19 underwent the Trans-Lagrangian 1 insertion manoeuvre, marking the beginning of its 110-day trajectory to the destination around the L1 point. Aditya-L1 carries seven payloads to observe the photosphere, chromosphere, and the outermost layer of the sun (corona) using electromagnetic and particle detectors. It has a mission life of five years.
Alaska Airlines grounds 737 Max 9 planes after section blows out mid-air
A piece of the wall on an Alaska Airlines flight popped off mid-flight as the plane was traveling from Portland to Ontario, California. This is terrifying. After about 35 minutes into the flight, the side panel of the plane came off, reportedly sucking out passengers’ belongings including phones.
A small child reportedly had to be held down so they weren’t sucked out. The child, who was closest to the missing panel, lost his shirt and his skin turned red from the wind.
“Following tonight’s event on Flight 1282, we have decided to take the precautionary step of temporarily grounding our fleet of 65 Boeing 737-9 aircraft,” Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci said.
